ISO is the International Organization for Standardization; It is an NGO that gathers experts from different fields to develop voluntary international standards covering everything from manufactured products to healthcare. ISO standards, on a global level, promote international trade through the establishment of common standards between different nations. At a product or service-specific level, ISO standards help ensure goods or services are reliable and of excellent quality. Businesses that adopt ISO standards are more productive and produce higher-quality goods. The goal of ISO is to achieve conformity of products and services to meet customer needs through quality management standards. ISO holds vendors like us accountable to provide clients with the confidence that they are purchasing the highest quality products.
ISO was founded in 1947 with 25 countries forming 67 technical committees. Today, 163 countries are part of the International Organization for Standardization and ISO has published over 21613 International Standards, including almost all aspects of business and tech industries.
ISO 9001:2015 Certification and Why it Matters
The ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard requires organizations to continually improve their processes using business metrics. The ISO 9001 quality certification demonstrates that an organization offers products and services of consistently high quality. It also serves as a tool to help organizations streamline their processes and become more efficient.
The ISO 9001:2015 standard (previously ISO 9001:2008) covers the requirements for organizational quality management systems. Per ISO, there are a few different benefits for an organization to become 9001 certified:
- It shows that it can consistently produce high-quality goods and services that satisfy customers and regulations.
- It increases customer satisfaction.
- It further addresses potential risks related to its field.
- It demonstrates conformity to specified quality management system requirements.
Recently, the 9001:2008 certification was updated to reflect the changing state of business and technology, globalization, and growing international trade. The resulting ISO 9001:2015 certification focuses more on performance and the customer. Certified organizations are coached to tailor their standards to focus on performance by combining the process-based approach with risk-based thinking, which recognizes that not all processes have the same impact on the organization’s ability to deliver goods or services. After September 2018, the former 2008 standard will no longer be valid.
